American Indian Fairy Tales

American Indian Fairy Tales bridges two distinct worlds: the profound, oral traditions of the Indigenous peoples of the Great Lakes and Lake Superior regions, and the early 20th-century literary adaptation that brought these treasures to a wider audience. The foundation of this collection rests upon the monumental work of Henry R. Schoolcraft (1793–1864), a pioneering ethnologist and government agent who lived among the Ojibwe and neighboring tribes. In the 1830s, Schoolcraft dedicated himself to recording their myths, legends, and allegories, publishing them initially in 1839 as Algic Researches. He sought to capture the authentic voice of a culture that preserved its laws, values, and cosmic understandings not through stone or parchment, but through the living breath of storytellers. Decades later, in 1921, William Trowbridge Larned (1865–1928) revisited Schoolcraft's collections, retelling these marvelous narratives with young readers and timeless wonder in mind. Guided by the framing presence of Iagoo, the legendary Indian story-teller, these tales do more than merely entertain. They offer profound insights into human resilience, the delicate balance between humanity and nature, and the moral framework of societies deeply attuned to the natural world.
